A Biblical Perspective on Music

Introduction

A number of years ago, I was asked to teach music and Bible classes in a Christian school in Rochester, New York.  It was then when I knelt next to my desk and simply asked God to show me what the Bible said about music.  I knew I should not just teach the "normal stuff" about what the world believes about music; after all, this was a Christian school.  But I did not have a clue to what the Bible said about music other than the standard references to praise.  Over these past years, the Lord truly has answered that prayer.

I then took a music concordance and looked up each and every verse that had any direct application to music and quickly realized there are over 500 references directly related to music in my King James Bible.  At the time, I was amazed when I realized that music was such an important subject to God; but today, I understand why.  I encourage you to read or listen to my sermon on the importance of music and you too may also understand why music is such an important subject with God and is so needed by Christians today.

We are not to be ignorant of Satan's devices and we must consider the use of music as one of Satan's own tools - especially these days.

I was then guided to Psalm 68:4 to see the actual purpose of music when I visited with Pastor Rick Sowell in Toledo, Ohio.  He steered me in the scriptural direction concerning God's proper design for music and preaching.  I had been preparing to head off into the modern Christian direction as I was planning on using my music to draw folks to the Lord as well as bring new folks into the local church.

Pastor Sowell swiftly reminded that winning folks with music is NOT the way the Lord operates nor is it even the purpose of music. God reaches out towards people through preaching of His word, not music.

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;
but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
I Corinthians 1:18

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God,
it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
I Corinthians 1:21

As I have studied each and every verse in my King James Bible concerning music, I have noticed that there is a pattern - a very amazing pattern.  All of the verses on music fit into at least one of three main divisions of Psalm 68:4.  They really do!

My preaching sermons expound more on Psalm 68:4, but for the purpose of this book, I ask you to prayerfully consider the information in this book that is explained through the use and design of  Psalm 68:4.  It will be a major help in your understanding of this book and how it is being presented.
